WebMD is a user-friendly gateway to extensive free information about diseases, conditions and maintaining good health. Here you can post a question on the discussion boards that may be answered by an expert in the field, or find a doctor (and in some cases make an appointment online). You can also check your symptoms and read articles written for the newly diagnosed.

WebMD’s home page features news reports of general interest, together with a link to the day’s medical and health news. By following this link you’ll find lists of recent drug and medical device recalls and warnings. The news page also contains Special Reports – a series of longer articles about focused topics, such as cancer – and the column Second Opinion, a commentary about some medical topic of current interest.

The Condition Centers A-Z link takes you to a long list of subjects, from “Aging” to “Women’s Health.” Each subject contains additional links that cover signs and symptoms, causes, treatments, management problems and general advice and encouragement, depending on the topic. Some sub-links also feature interactive assessment tools that will generate a report that you can take with you when you visit your doctor. These subjects can also be located using a keyword search from the home page.

Clicking the link, WebMD Health, takes you to the site’s on-line magazine. In addition to news and features, this page often contains a link to a scheduled live on-line chat with an expert on a particular topic, such as stress and eating (registration required).

The Medscape from WebMD link, also found on the home page, is a gateway to an affiliated site primarily intended for health professionals. This site contains news and lists more than three dozen medical specialty pages.
